Bugs, Boundaries & Blooming Anyway
Lavender Wisdom, Bug-Repelling Blends, and Simple Rituals for Summer Ease

Hello Friend!
It’s lavender season again up here on the mountain.
Every year, I wait for this moment. The scent, the color, the way the fields seem to hum with their own quiet joy. Harvest will begin in late July, and then we wait another eleven moons for it all to return. That’s part of the magic. It reminds us to savor the blooming while it’s here.
Between the rows of lavender, we lay down heavy covers to keep the weeds at bay. Though I often wonder, is anything really a weed? Sometimes, lavender itself finds its way through those thick covers, pushing up into the light. Technically out of place, and yet completely at home. It reminds me: grow where you are. Even when the conditions aren’t ideal. Especially then.
This time of year also falls under Cancer’s celestial influence. Whether or not you follow astrology, this season carries a softer energy. It's a time for tending our relationships, our emotions, and our own inner landscapes. Maybe it’s a good moment to reach out to someone you've been thinking about. To let tears or laughter move through. To make space for new connections.

Aromatic Creations Recipe
Keep bugs at bay with this aromatic outdoor companion.
Ingredients
30 ml Catnip Hydrosol (Nepeta cataria)
30 ml Peppermint Hydrosol (Mentha × piperita)
8 to 9 ml Solubol (dispersant)
20 drops Catnip Oil (Nepeta cataria)
20 drops Citronella Java Oil (Cymbopogon winterianus)
15 drops Patchouli Oil (Pogostemon cablin)
Directions
Add the essential oils and Solubol to a 2 fl oz (60 ml) PET spray bottle.
Add the hydrosols.
Cap tightly and shake well before each use.
Spray directly onto exposed skin or clothing, avoiding the eyes, mouth, and any broken skin.
I like to make small batches and store them in the refrigerator. It stays fresh for about two to four weeks. When it’s gone, I make another batch and keep on enjoying the season.
For kids ages five to ten
Reduce the essential oils to a total of 12 drops and use 1.8 ml (about 48 drops) of Solubol.
For younger children
Using just the hydrosols works beautifully.
Notes of Discovery
There’s always that moment, usually early in the summer, when I feel the first bite at the back of my neck or along my scalp. A tiny mosquito or gnat, reminding me that it’s time to bring out the bug spray. And I want protection that works without harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, or sticky residue.
That’s why I make my own.
In this post, I’m sharing the recipes I use to prevent bugs from biting using essential oils, natural carriers, and hydrosols. You’ll learn:

Product Spotlight
Cymbopogon winterianus is steam-distilled with care and intention from the tall, lemony grasses of Indonesia. Sourced from warm, humid climates and shaped by rich tropical soil, citronella java carries the brightness of its homeland in every drop.
Often recognized for its ability to send bugs flying (or scurrying!) in the opposite direction, this oil offers much more than protection. With its crisp citrusy lift and gentle grounding quality, it brings a sense of clarity and calm to both body and space.
Its aroma is fresh and bright with notes of lemon, a soft sweetness, and a whisper of green wood. It’s a clean scent that clears the air and invites a breath of relief, whether you’re outdoors or simply unwinding at home.
Why I Love It
Helps keep mosquitoes and other biting insects away
Calms the nervous system and helps ease tension
Supports the body’s natural response to pain and inflammation
Gently purifies the air and surfaces
Supports resilience in the immune system
Tones and tightens skin when properly diluted.

How About A Candle!
Q: Can I use citronella java essential oil in a candle?
A: Yes, you can. I love doing just that. The gentle flicker of candlelight paired with the fresh, lemony aroma of citronella java feels both soothing and purposeful. It helps set a calming mood and supports your outdoor space by naturally deterring insects.
When I make these candles, I think of them as aromatic companions. They’re simple to create, and they hold a blend of beauty and function that feels just right for warm evenings on the porch or by the garden.
Jenny and I created one during a live session, and it has become a community favorite. If you’d like to try making your own, here’s the recipe we use: DIY Bug Repellent Candle
