Grief Support with Essential Oils + Calendula Hydrosol for Summer Healing

Explore a comforting aromatherapy blend for emotional support, the golden medicine of Calendula Hydrosol, and simple ways to care for your heart and skin this season.

Hello Friend!

The Summer Solstice is here, and with it, the sun lingers just a little longer each evening. The light feels generous. The Earth is fully alive. And still, this season has carried a quiet sorrow.

Over the past few weeks, several people close to me have lost someone dear. These are not my losses, but they are near enough for me to feel. I’ve found myself holding space for friends navigating grief while noticing how it settles into the corners of my own heart, too. The tenderness of being human, how we feel, even what isn’t ours.

It reminds me that we are never separate. Grief moves through the collective. It brings with it a hush, a reverence, and a deeper awareness of the impermanence in all things.

And yet, the lavender is blooming.

Whole fields are awash in violet and quiet strength. There is comfort there, not in pretending everything is fine, but in remembering that the world is always in motion. Loss and growth live side by side. The Earth continues to turn. Roots deepen even as petals fall. And the oils we work with, our trusted companions, hold space for it all.

The wheel keeps turning. Life and death. Rebirth. The seasons keep moving, and so do we.

Notes of Discovery

Can scent help heal the heart? If you’ve ever felt a wave of calm while walking through a sunlit garden or sitting beneath the trees, you’ve already touched the quiet magic of nature.

In this classic post from The Aromahead Blog, we explore how essential oils can support emotional healing, especially in times of depression, grief, or heavy-heartedness. You’ll learn three gentle, customizable methods to bring these plant allies into your daily rhythm, along with six deeply supportive essential oils chosen to uplift the spirit, steady the mind, and root you back into yourself.

Product Spotlight

Distilled from the fresh blossoms of Calendula officinalis, this hydrosol is a steady companion for the skin and the spirit.

Calendula is known for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, making this hydrosol a powerful support for both surface and deeper wounds. It encourages tissue repair, helps prevent infection, and may even assist in reducing minor bleeding. This is a first-aid ally that belongs in every home apothecary.

It soothes while it strengthens, gently detoxifying and supporting the skin’s natural healing rhythm. And beyond the physical, calendula brings something more.

There is a golden warmth in this plant that reminds us of wholeness. Of resilience. Of the way life continues through cycles. Growth. Fading and resting and blooming again.

Many herbalists describe calendula as possessing the “golden ray,” a vibrational essence that nourishes the solar plexus. This is the energetic center just above the navel, associated with confidence, clarity, and inner power. It is a subtle medicine, but not a small one.

Ways to Use Calendula Hydrosol

  • As a daily facial toner for sensitive, reactive, or inflamed skin

  • To cool and calm sun-exposed, windburned, or irritated areas

  • On deeper wounds, scrapes, or bites to help prevent infection and support repair

  • Spritzed over the heart or solar plexus during times of emotional transition or fatigue

  • As a gentle first-aid spray or part of your daily body care ritual

Bring calendula into your skincare routine, your herbal first-aid kit, or your emotional support practice. Calendula holds the sun in its petals and offers a steady light when you need it most.

Grief Blend on the Go

The Aromatic Creation I shared above, blended in a carrier oil, is also beautiful in a personal inhaler. Sometimes we need something we can reach for in the moment. Whether you're sitting at a desk, taking a walk, riding public transportation, or feeling the overwhelm rise, having an aromatic ally in your pocket can make all the difference.

And it couldn’t be simpler to make.

Use the same essential oils (without the jojoba oil). Add them to a blank inhaler. Use 15 to 18 drops for adults and 8 to 12 drops for children.

This is a fantastic way to stay connected to the blend’s supportive qualities wherever you are. The inhaler keeps the aroma close, personal, and discreet, yet deeply effective.

If you’re new to making inhalers, I recommend this short video tutorial:

While the video guides you through a digestive blend, substitute the essential oils from the “Grieving a Loss” recipe shared above. You will have a comforting, portable support tool ready whenever you need it.

I think healing starts and ends with loving each other and caring for each other as much as we care for ourselves. It's the golden rule. And it’s the beginning of everything we truly need..
