Tents, Windstorms, and a Little Stillness

Finding humor, healing, and clarity with Frankincense serrata

Hello Friend!

Jenny and I have been spending several days at the lake, trying to catch the last of summer while we can. It wasn’t exactly relaxing at first. Right after we got off the lake from paddleboarding, a windstorm came out of nowhere. Our tents started flying, the stakes wouldn’t hold, and we had to dive inside and stay put until morning.

By the next day, everything had shifted. The wind was gone, and the calm was almost surreal. Quiet, still, and exactly what we needed.

Since then, we’ve had space to slow down and breathe. To reset a little. It’s been a good reminder of how important it is to take breaks like this, even short ones. And the best part? The rest of the family joined us for a few days!

And you don’t need to be at a lake to feel that. A walk in a nearby park, sitting under a tree, or just listening to the wind in the leaves can help the body settle.

These little moments reconnect us with something steady and familiar. We weren’t made to be cut off from the natural world. That’s part of why essential oils and plant medicine can be so effective. They speak the same language as our bodies. They help us unwind, release tension, and reconnect with ourselves in a simple way.

Aromatic Creations Recipe

This blend smells like a stroll through a sun-warmed forest with a whisper of wild roses in bloom.

At the heart of this body oil is Frankincense serrata, long treasured for its ability to ease joint discomfort and bring a sense of steady calm to the mind. Its resinous, grounding aroma sets the tone for this blend, helping to release physical tension while inviting deeper relaxation.  Cedarwood adds warmth and stability, helping the body feel supported and rooted. And even in the smallest amount, rose absolute lends its unmistakable beauty, nourishing the skin, softening the heart, and reminding us to meet ourselves with compassion.

Essential Oils

  • 7 drops Frankincense (Boswellia serrata)

  • 6 drops Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)

  • 2 drops Rose Absolute (Rosa x damascena)

Add essential oil drops to 1 oz of a favorite carrier such as jojoba oil or an unscented lotion.

Notes of Discovery

This week on the blog, we’re blending a simple, plant-based shower gel that feels like a walk through quiet woods. With aloe, jojoba, frankincense, black spruce, and a hint of neroli, this recipe supports both skin and spirit, free from synthetic ingredients, offering a pure connection to nature.

Tip! Substitute Frankincense (Boswellis serrata) for Frankincence (Boswellia carterii)

Whether you're starting your day or winding down, this gentle formula helps you pause, breathe, and return to center.

Should You Be “Fart Walking”?

Within our NLC (Natural Living Community) Self-Care Practices group, Ann T. sparked a lively conversation that had us smiling and thinking. Social media trends tend to rise and fade in a flash—but this one is holding strong. Why? Because it’s simple, backed by science, and surprisingly effective.

Known for generations as an “after-dinner stroll,” this habit has recently been rebranded with a cheeky new name: fart walking. Humor aside, walking for just 4–5 minutes within an hour after eating has a host of gentle, meaningful benefits:

  • Supports digestion and eases bloating

  • Encourages healthy bowel movement and stomach motility

  • Helps the stomach empty more efficiently

  • Reduces the duration of stomach acid, easing heartburn for many

  • Stabilizes blood sugar levels

  • Boosts circulation and lowers blood pressure

  • Reduces cortisol, which may support better sleep

It doesn’t require fancy gear or big-time commitments. Just you, a short walk, and the willingness to move with intention after meals.

What’s your take on fart walking? Curious? Already doing it?

We’d love to hear from you—join the conversation inside the NLC group! If you aren’t a member, it’s only $24 a year! And lots going on!!

The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world’s joy.

Henry Ward Beecher

The sun gives indiscriminately. Its light and warmth fall on both the mighty oak and the smallest wildflower. And, in this interdependent world, each tree, each flower, each being the sun touches contributes to the world’s expression of beauty and joy.

Keep blending!
