What Blocks Our Deep Rest With Hops Essential Oil
Untangling the knots that keep us held in tension so we can sleep & feel restored

Hello Friend!
Laughter is good medicine. So is thinking a kind thought. I can think of no better way to support our health, mind, body, and spirit. Long before we had studies, charts, or written records, laughter was regarded as a form of medicine. And it still is.
So why do we cling so tightly to thoughts that stir up stress? Why do we rehearse worst-case scenarios or assume the worst of others? We’ve trained ourselves to find comfort in being right, even if it means making someone else wrong. It’s worth sitting with.
My daughter Jenny and I were talking the other day about how easy it is to focus on the 20 percent that’s hard and miss the 80 percent that’s working beautifully. We do this more than we realize. And when we catch ourselves doing it, we get to choose again.
This year, in our Aromatherapy Certification Program, we’ve been taking part in what we call the ACP Companion Journey. It’s like an imaginative backpacking trip. We’ve been unpacking what weighs us down (like old beliefs, patterns, and habits) as we walk with the plants and examine the chemical families, archetypes, and our own inner terrain.
It’s been deeply moving to witness what unfolds when we give ourselves permission to let go and when we choose to carry what brings peace, joy, and alignment.
The essential oils, our plant allies, walk with us on this journey. Their lineages are ancient. Their gifts, potent. Flowers, roots, trees, seeds… they are all part of the medicine.
I am also proud of our students and graduates for their hard work. For making a difference in their own lives, which naturally ripples out to the people around them.

This simple blend is one I’ve come back to often. It’s supportive, bright, and beautifully balanced, especially when your mind needs clarity and your spirit needs a lift.

The Oil Within the Plant: Hops
For a limited time, I’m sharing a Thrive Premium article so you can experience what our members receive every month. These are crafted to deepen your practice and provide fresh insights, therapeutic blends, and real-world applications.
This article is all about a surprising and powerful oil: Hops (Humulus lupulus).
Yes, the same plant used in brewing beer also offers essential oil with deep therapeutic value.
You’ll learn how Hops essential oil works with key systems in the body, including pain and inflammation pathways. It contains a rich mix of β-myrcene, α-caryophyllene, and β-caryophyllene, giving it analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. These compounds support the nervous system, help regulate pain, and may even mimic some of the actions of cannabinoids in the body.
The article walks you through both the science and the subtle energetics of this aromatic ally, including how to use it, what to blend it with, and why it’s worth getting to know.

Product Spotlight
This month, we’ve been talking a lot about sleep, and one little-known essential oil deserves a brighter spotlight: Hops (Humulus lupulus var. Pekko).
Distilled from fresh flowers grown in the Pacific Northwest, Hops essential oil is a calming and grounding oil. It has a long history in herbalism and is beginning to find its voice in the aromatherapy world, too, particularly in supporting rest and relaxation.
Hops essential oil can help ease physical tension, support the body in unwinding from the day, and assist the nervous system when stress begins to take hold. It helps soothe sore muscles and joints, calms inflammation, and gently encourages the immune system. When used in the evening, Hops can create a sense of quiet that makes it easier to transition into sleep. Its relaxing properties also make it a steadying choice for emotional support during the day.
And then there’s the aroma.
This variety of Hops carries a beautiful blend of citrus and gentle florals, enriched by soft notes of melon, cucumber, and fresh sage. It’s bright but not overpowering, clean with a hint of earth, and settles into the space like a calming breath. It’s the kind of scent that makes you want to pause, sit still for a moment, and take it in.
What makes this oil even more special is the way it’s made. The distiller uses fresh flowers, not dried, which preserves the full expression of the plant’s chemistry. Hops flowers are delicate and require careful cultivation. A small amount of stream-safe pest control is used to protect the plants, a rare and responsible approach that doesn’t compromise the purity of the oil.
And while Hops belongs to the same plant family as cannabis, it does not contain THC or CBD. It’s non-psychoactive, beautifully therapeutic, and welcomed everywhere.
If you’re looking for a unique oil to support calm, rest, and gentle strength, Hops may be just what your practice has been missing.
From The Vine
Does Hops essential oil contain any of the components that make cannabis psychoactive?
The answer is no.
Although Hops and cannabis both belong to the Cannabaceae family and share some similar terpenes, Hops essential oil does not contain THC or CBD, the compounds responsible for the "high" associated with marijuana. It is safe, non-psychoactive, and welcomed in jurisdictions worldwide.
It’s a beautiful example of how plants can share chemistry and ancestry without sharing effects. And it's another reason why Hops is such a fascinating, underappreciated oil for emotional support, sleep, and therapeutic blending.
