Ylang Ylang and the Colors of Balance

A Fall-Inspired Blend, Chakra Wisdom, and the Beauty of Color in Aromatherapy

Hello Friend!

What Color Are You Today?

If you were to describe yourself by a color, what would it be? Blue, orange, purple, green, yellow… muted tones or bold hues?

Each color carries its own energy. Blue may bring calm and truth, orange radiates creativity, purple invites wisdom, green offers balance, and yellow shines with joy and confidence. When we notice the colors that feel most alive for us, they often hint at what our body and spirit are reaching for.

Take ylang ylang blossoms, for example. They glow a radiant golden yellow, connecting with the Solar Plexus Chakra, the center of personal power, lightness, and emotional flow. Likewise, ylang ylang’s sweet, sensual aroma softens the heart, gently supporting compassion and connection. The color and aroma work hand in hand to wrap us in a warm embrace.

I find this connection so fascinating that I created a Chakra Course to explore how these colors and energy centers influence mood. They also give insight into our physical body. The chakras can be linked with organs and systems, such as the liver, digestion, head, or throat, offering another layer of understanding as we work with essential oils.

When we pay attention to the colors that call to us, we may be listening to what our energy centers are asking for. And often, the oils that resonate with those colors bring exactly the kind of balance and support we need.

So, what color feels like “you” today, and what oil is waiting there to meet you?

Aromatic Creations Recipe

Fall invites us to gather warmth through friendships, golden light, and the rich scents of spice and wood. This week’s blend brings warmth into our home with the lush floral sweetness of ylang ylang, the brightness of citrus, the grounding of cedarwood, and the bold spice of clove bud.

Essential Oils

  • 3 drops Sweet Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis

  • 3 drops Ylang Ylang Oil (Cananga odorata var. genuina

  • 2 drops Cedarwood Oil (Cedrus atlantica

  • 1 drop Clove Bud Oil (Syzygium aromaticum

Add to your diffuser with fresh water and let the aroma fill your space. The result is sweet yet spicy, bright yet grounding.

Want to change this into a body oil? Simply add the drops above to 1 fl oz (30 ml) of your favorite carrier oil such as sweet almond (Prunus dulcis), jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis), or coconut oil (Cocos nucifera). Shake gently before use and enjoy as a nourishing evening ritual.

Notes of Discovery

As the daylight grows shorter, our bodies produce less vitamin D and serotonin. We get more melatonin, the “hormone of darkness.” It’s no wonder that fatigue, stress, or even low mood can sneak in this time of year. Essential oils interact with the limbic system, the part of the brain that governs emotion and memory, helping us calm anxiety, lift the spirit, or anchor ourselves in a moment of rest.

In my latest blog post, “Fall into Balance: Aromatherapy for Mental Health & Seasonal Shifts,” you’ll learn several key ways that essential oils support our mind-body systems through the season.

For example, they can boost our mood, calm anxiety, support antidepressant medications, regulate the nervous system, boost healthy neurotransmitters, encourage healthy blood pressure, and more.

Balance is a practice, not a destination. The information in this post offers valuable tools for your wellbeing.

Product Spotlight

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata var. genuina) is one of the most intoxicating and beloved floral essential oils.

Our ylang ylang comes from the forests of Madagascar, where the trees grow in a rugged environment that shapes the blossoms into something truly extraordinary. Sustainably and organically grown, the flowers are steam distilled to produce a rich, heavy floral oil that is exotic, sweet, and deeply sensual.

Ylang ylang is well known for its ability to quiet the mind, heart, and body. Its aroma is relaxing, almost hypnotic, and it has been treasured for centuries as an oil of love and connection. In massage oils, ylang ylang not only encourages the release of muscle tension stored over the years, it also supports the heart in opening to deeper healing and bliss.

This is a strong oil, so just a drop or two is often all that’s needed. Too much can quickly become overwhelming. But used with care, ylang ylang offers a lush floral depth that transforms blends with its presence.

Why I love ylang ylang:

  • Creates an atmosphere of calm, romance, and relaxation

  • Supports emotional balance and eases stress

  • Encourages a sense of connection and intimacy

  • Offers skin- and hair-nourishing benefits in blends

  • Adds lush floral depth to citrus, spice, or wood oils

From The Vine

Aromahead student Holly had a question about using essential oils to balance the chakras. One of her fellow students had some good tips!

Holly W.: Does anyone have any recommendations on which oils to use for each of the 7 chakras to balance them, or if they have any book suggestions that go over which oils to use for each of the chakras?

Karen D.: Hi Holly!  I did my research paper on this topic, and in my work with Essential Oils, I primarily focus on their energetic properties.  I have also created a set of blends for each of the main chakras.  I think you would enjoy Valeri Ann Worwood's book "Aromatherapy for the Soul."  I agree that when blending oils for their energetic properties, it is very subjective, and there are many choices for each chakra. You can choose your oils based on the plant part.  For example, an oil distilled from the root of the plant, like vetiver, would be good for balancing the root chakra.  You can also align the colors of the distilled oil with the corresponding chakra colors.  Ex:  German Chamomile is blue and therefore would balance the Throat Chakra, which is also represented by the color blue.  You can also simply use your intuition.

Each shade and bloom carries its own message, much like the oils we’re drawn to. The colors and scents that speak to us often reflect what our body, heart, and spirit are reaching for in this moment.
